How Can A Mattress Affect Back Pain

How Can a Mattress Affect Back Pain?
If you experience back pain, you’re not alone. Back pain is a common affliction, and up to 80
percent of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives. And mattresses can be a
source of pain or relief.
What Causes Back Pain?
There are many possible sources of back pain, and some sources can combine to cause or
exacerbate back pain. Causes can include accidents, sprains, stress, and injuries. Even simply
aging can be a factor affecting back pain.
The Relationship Between Mattresses and Back Pain
Pain can make it more difficult for you to sleep, and if you’re not sleeping well, you may struggle
more to manage your pain.  When you sleep well on a mattress that meets your needs can help you avoid back pain and may relieve some pain.
The Right Mattress for Back Pain
Although firm mattresses are commonly associated with relieving back pain, the fact is there
isn’t a single type of firmness of mattress that is ideal for all. You should choose a mattress that
will offer good support, alignment, and firmness to meet your needs.
Look for a mattress that aligns your spine well so your spine isn’t dropping too deeply into
sagging or too soft spots on your mattress. It should offer good support, pushing gently back
onto your body with a comfortable amount of firmness. You want to be able to sink into the bed
enough to feel comforted and supported, but not so much that you feel you’re too deep into the

Rule of Thumb
What’s comfortable for one person isn’t necessarily comfortable for everyone else. The right
one for your needs depends on your weight, the position you sleep in, and other factors. In
general, a firm mattress will be more supportive for people of a heavier weight than average (typically 230 pounds or heavier) and a soft mattress will be good for people who are below
average in weight (usually 130 pounds or lighter). This is because the heavier you are, the more
pressure you put on the mattress. A firmer mattress will not allow you to sink too deeply. But if
you’re lighter, a too firm mattress won’t offer any give, so you need a softer one. If you’re
average weight, a medium firm mattress (also known as a universal comfort mattress) will
typically be a good fit.
Supporting Healthy Sleep
In addition to choosing the right mattress, it’s important to practice healthy sleep habits and
sleep in a position that can help you avoid or relieve back pain.
Maintain healthy sleep habits. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine.
Ensure that your bedroom is a healthy sleep environment, free of distractions and bright lights.
Avoid screen time, caffeine, and alcohol late at night so you don’t experience unnecessary
difficulty with sleep.
Sleep in the right position. If you’re prone to back pain, sleeping on your back can be helpful.
It’s the best position for back pain because it minimizes your pressure points and distributes
your weight evenly. Side sleeping may also be helpful, especially if you put a pillow between
your knees to offer better spinal alignment. It’s not a good idea to sleep on your stomach, as it
can cause you to sink into your bed too deeply, causing too much pressure on your spine.
Although back pain is sometimes unavoidable, a good mattress and healthy sleep hygiene can
be helpful in getting sleep and relieving back pain. Choose the right mattress for your needs and
practice good sleep habits to offer support for back pain.

Chiropractic Wellness Care

Chiropractors (and their patients!) know that good health and wellness begins in the alignment of the spine.  So what is chiropractic wellness care?  Chiropractic wellness care is receiving chiropractic adjustments to the spine on a regular basis.  These regular chiropractic adjustments allow patients to experience wellness and positive effects beyond pain management.

So what does a chiropractic adjustment do for you? Chiropractors evaluate and correct misalignments in the spine, called vertebral subluxations – conditions of the spine where alignment and/or movement patterns of the vertebrae are abnormal – causing irritation and inflammation. Vertebral subluxations interfere with proper nervous system function – the one body system that communicates with all others. Chiropractors are the only health care professionals specifically trained to locate and correct spinal subluxations. Adjustments unblock these pressure points and allow for your brain to more easily send messages down your spine and out to nerves throughout your body.

Alignment – from your head to your toes – protects your spine and offers the optimum level of wellness for a lifetime. Schedule your next chiropractic appointment and be well today!

Headaches and Chiropractic

Wondering if your headaches can be helped by chiropractic care?   While triggers range from stress and lack of sleep to whiplash and trauma, evidence suggests that spinal adjustments can serve as an effective treatment to relieve the suffering associated with headaches and migraines.

headachesMost headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck, often as a result of sedentary activities and time spent in a single posture (such as hours in front of computer or television screens) which increases joint irritation and tension.

Our patients find that improving the movement and alignment of the bones in the neck alleviates the stress and pressure that results in headaches and migraines.  Dehydration, changes in the weather, and allergies are some of the other major causes of headaches, especially for people who live in Austin.  Chiropractic adjustments will help you adapt to the changing weather and allergies we experience in Central Texas.  If you suffer from chronic headaches or migraines and are seeking an effective alternative to over the counter or prescription medications, schedule an appointment to evaluate your treatment options.  You don’t have to be in pain, we can help.

Care for your garden (and your spine)

Garden Fitness Stretches are important to keep your spine safe and healthy.

Garden Fitness Stretches

Warm weather has arrived and its time for many of you to begin working in the yard.  Gardening can be a fun and relaxing way to enjoy the outdoors. These activities may also involve bending, twisting, pulling and lifting that your body might not be ready for. Gardening and landscaping can bring on various injuries, usually as a result of trying to do too much too soon. But it doesn’t have to be this way! Here a few chiropractor-approved recommendations for maintaining spine and neck health this spring season:

Gardening Recommendations

  • While pulling weeds or planting flowers, kneel and use a soft pad under your knees to reduce unnecessary bending or twisting.
  • Warm your body up with a few stretches and some lunges or sidesteps before spending hours in your garden or yard doing repetitive movements.
  • Avoid carrying heavy items. If you have a heavy bag of soil or pot to move, bend with your knees and find help to carry these items whenever possible. Consider using a wheelbarrow or carts if you must make multiple trips across the yard.
  • Consider using lighter electric tools, if you already struggle with back and neck pain.
  • Take breaks! Stay hydrated and and give your joints a break to reduce stiffness.
  • Secure and stabilize ladders before climbing, reducing risks or falls and sudden jerking movements.

With the preparation and a spinal safety approach, your time in the garden does not have to present a threat to your health.  Here’s a link to other articles on gardening safety and the benefits of chiropractic to gardeners.
